Webinar “Innovative approaches to enhancing media literacy of students and teachers”

If you teach students about critical thinking and responsible online communication, and you are looking for inspiration and new methods, this webinar is for you!

On March 24th, at 15h00-16h00 CET AMeLiE – Advanced media literacy education to counter online hate speech – will have it’s on-air time as part of the ALL DIGITAL weeks 2022 campaign (check the full agenda of the campaign here). The project and the platform will be presented at a Zoom webinar on the topic Innovative approaches to enhancing media literacy of students and teachers. AMeLiE fits perfectly into this definition: it is innovative, designed for school students of all ages, and aimed at teachers who work in schools across Europe. The event is organised in collaboration with another project – CrAL: Creative Audiovisual Lab for the promotion of critical thinking and media literacy.

Both projects want to educate young students on how to handle online communication and critically analyse and reflect on the relationship between reality and media.

In AMeLiE, teachers work with their students on the topic of online hate speech through activities on non-hostile communication. Students learn how to analyse messages spread through online media, how to critically assess their purpose and potential effect and how to choose and promote alternative narratives in their everyday online communication. The method is based on a very simple but effective set of principles – the Manifesto of non-hostile communication. Chiara Borsini, Project Manager at EGInA and AMeLiE project coordinator, will explain the principles of non-hostile communication, and will guide participants through the online platform, where any teacher or trainer can find materials for organising class activities. We will also hear from one of the teachers who are already testing the materials and their first-hand experience.

CrAL adopts a different approach – the language of cinema and moving images. But its ultimate aim is the same. By teaching students (and teachers) to reflect on how images represent the reality around them, and how they can be used to convey a certain message or point of view, they help them realise that behind every piece of audio-visual information there is a creator with their own ideas and agenda. At the webinar, Gabriela Ruseva, Project Officer at ALL DIGITAL and project manager for CrAL, will present another Manifesto – the Creative audio-visual lab manifesto, with basic principles of self-expression, reflection and creativity.
